Your Design Questions, Answered

01

What can be patented in Singapore?

To be patentable, an invention must be new (novel), involve an inventive step (be non-obvious), and be capable of industrial application. Discoveries, scientific theories, business methods, and methods of medical treatment, are generally not patentable. Our patent attorneys can advise on your specific invention’s eligibility.

02

How long does a Registered Design last in Singapore?

A Registered Design provides protection for an initial 5 year period from the filing date. It can be renewed for two additional 5-year periods, up to a maximum protection term of 15 years.
03

Patent vs. Industrial Design: What's the difference?

A Patent protects how something works, while a Registered Design protects what something looks like. A single product, like a new ergonomic chair, could be protected by both—a Patent for the unique tilting mechanism (function) and a Registered Design for its unique visual shape (appearance).
04

Can I file an international design application from Singapore?

Yes. Singapore is a member of the Hague Agreement. This allows you to file one single application, in one language, to seek design protection in over 90 member countries. We can manage this entire international process for you.
